Careers Advice

So you fancy working in the cycle industry do you. Well that's probably understandable considering. But what sectors of the industry are open to you and what will you need in terms of skills and personal attributes?

There are, as is the case in most industries, the commercial and retail sectors. However within the cycling industry there is also a number of organisations who's role within the industry is more in the way of campaigning. We will concentrate however on the first two.

What do you require to enter the commercial side of the industry?

I believe it would be fair to say, having spoken to many suppliers, that whilst a knowledge and perhaps love of cycling is of benefit. What is increasingly important however is commercial awareness and qualification. You will usually have to source trade publications if you are interested in entering this sector of the industry an excellent one is Bicycle Business.

What do you require to enter the retail side of the industry?
Local Courses

This to many is the most interesting sector of the industry and the sector which usually attracts cyclists. Being a cyclist of whatever type can be a considerable benefit. At worst you need to be reasonably knowledgeable regarding cycling. In-depth knowledge regarding cycles is not always necessary but is usually beneficial, as training is not always provided.

On the subject of training, any proof of training taken by yourself will dramatically improve your chances of being given a position. One would certainly think that if you were 'up against' a candidate who hadn't been trained, you would have an edge.

Training is important because as the industry stands at present, most retailers do not have the time, or resources, to induct trainees and/or provide ongoing training. You usually learn by doing, experimenting, watching or reading. Any candidate who has therefore shown their commitment to a career in the industry by undertaking some basic training shows the correct attitude.

We are not just saying the above because we provide training services, but that we recognise that many enter the industry only to leave very shortly afterwards, totally disillusioned. That's a great shame because it's a great industry to be involved in.
