Extra Mile, Swiss Challenge

Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, the entry fee is just £750 per team (less than £188 per person), which covers channel crossings, 4 nights accommodation, breakfast, receptions and 3 evening meals while in France.

All teams need a support vehicle. An estate car equipped with a rear or roof-mounted cycle rack capable of carrying up to 4 bikes and four team members is perfectly adequate. People carriers, 4x4 vehicles and vans are also suitable.

Teams of 4 will ride the 500 mile route in relay, raising cash for their favourite charities. You don't have to be an experienced cyclist to take part.

Just 40 miles a day is about the average distance each rider will cover, typically in 4 or 5 stages. You only need to average 15 mph or more to be back in time for dinner.

Travel

We sail from Dover to Calais at 16:00 on Thursday 2nd October and drive to Montreuil-sur-Mer (50 miles) where we stay overnight before starting the challenge on Friday 3rd October. We return from Calais to Dover on Monday 6th October at 18:00. Sailing times subject to confirmation.
The 3 day?s cycling are 3rd, 4th and 5th October.

Day 1: Montreuil to Epernay (180miles)
The challenge begins at Montreuil-sur-Mer, the historic walled town which was the setting for Victor Hugo?s book ?Les Miserables?. Using a detailed route plan and assisted by directional arrows and course marshals we will cycle through beautiful French countryside en route to Epernay, home of some of Frances most famous champagne producers. After a champagne reception and dinner we will sleep well at our hotels.

Day 2: Epernay to Vittel (170 miles)
This picturesque and more undulating stage provides beautiful views of the forest and lakes of the Haut Marne as we axchange champagne for ?..water! Our destination is the attractive Spa town of Vittel, famed for the bottled mineral water of the same name.

Day 3: Vittel to Neuchatel, Switzerland (150 miles)
The most dramatic views have been saved for our final day, but so, too, have the toughest climbs! The reward is a steep, winding descent to the swiss town of Neuchatel, famed for its clock-making, which has an idyllic location on the shore of Lake Neuchatel. After finding our hotel and bathing those aching muscles we will enjoy a reception and gala dinner to celebrate the completion of the Swiss Challenge.
