According to the Key Note 1995 Report, in 1994, Independent Bicycle Dealers (IBDs) had 38 percent market share; Halfords (with 300+ branches) had 32 percent, mail-order had 18 percent and corporates had 12 percent.
Halfords is now thought to account for 40+ percent of the total cycle retail market (Cycle Industry, 1996), although some estimates quote a figure as low as 20 percent (Bicycle Retailer and Industry News, USA, Feb. 1998).

It is generally thought that about 30 percent of all bikes are sold in the last three months of the year, in the run-up to Xmas. Halfords, for instance, sold 205 000 bikes at Christmas 1994 out of yearly total of 600 000. (Source: Cycle Industry).
