In 1994 there were 2.2 million new bikes sold, a drop from a 1990 peak of 2.8 million (Source: Key Note, 1995). In 1996 sales are thought to have increased to 2.6 million (Source: Mintel, unpublished figures). In 1997 volumes were estimated at 2.4 million with total value down by 4 percent (Source: Cycle Industry, 1997). Poor weather and the expected economic downturn which never quite materialised meant the figures for 1998 were down again by up to 12 percent.
