There are a great number of consumer cycling magazines. Mountain Biking UK (Future Publishing) is the top-selling monthly title with a peak audited circulation figure of just over 60 000 (ABC). The readership level for MBUK is estimated at 135,337. Other titles include: Cycling Plus (Future Publishing); Cycling Weekly, Cycle Sport, Mountain Bike Rider and Mountain Biker International (all IPC), Bycycle and Bike Culture Quarterly (Open Road Ltd) and Cycle Touring & Campaigning (CTC). BMX and downhill mountain biking have niche titles such as Ride BMX and Dirt (both 4130 Publishing Ltd.). New publisher Cabal has launched Pro Cycling (a road racing monthly) and acquired Maximum Mountain Bike (an MTB magazine for a 25+ age readership) from Zone Ltd.
The advertising market (all titles) was estimated at £2.2m with cover sales of c. £6m. (Source: Cycle Industry, 1997).
There are two trade papers: Bicycle Trade & Industry, and BicycleBusiness. Only this last title created by editor/publisher Carlton Reid after his company was sacked from producing Cycle Industry for cost cutting reasons has a website. Both titles are sent to a tradewide mailing list every month.
Exhibitions
There are two main annual bike exhibitions: The Cycle and Leisure Show (trade only with a public 'preview day') was held at the NEC, 27th Feb 3rd March in 1999. It will be held on 5-7th March in 2000.
Bike 2000 is a public show organised by Future Publishing, and is also staged at the NEC.
As a special in 2000, the CTC and the Bicycle Association are running the National Festival of Cycling 2000 on York Knavesmire on June 23-25th June which links in with the Sustrans Ride the Net 'opening of the National Cycle Network' initiative.
