Well the first thing you need to think of when respraying or painting any metal object is how to remove the existing paint or covering?

You could, if you wanted to, spend hours with paint stripper, files, emery paper etc. or spend that time 'at the pub' and have the item shot blasted, a simple service but one which could save you hours and provide a metal surface better prepared for its new coat of many colours.
